My proposal for the Series and Cycle project was a site-specific intervention on the building. I wanted to address a couple of historical and political issues that even such a small structure manages to bind:
-One of them is the relationship that the Plattenvereinigung embodies itself: two different pre-fab-systems gathered as a metaphor for the two different political orientations bound together after the re-unification of Germany.
-A second is the fact that the old airport where it is placed today has become a park and urban space for everyone's enjoyment. On the field there are still the typical white/red structures that exist on any airfield and that have become also landmarks in the park themselves.
-The platform in front of the Plattenvereinigung used by skateboarders is made out of stones that once belonged to the Palast der Republik. Most of the young skaters rolling over those stones weren’t even born when that building was standing for one of the most powerful political and economical counterparts of capitalist system.
-The last one is the ironical parallel that exists between the airport's function during the Cold War, when it was saving the citizens of starvation, and today it is a refugee camp for people fleeing countries in war.
As material for my installation the white/red barrier tape served, that encounters as a warning signal on any construction site. For those who transit the city, these sites become temporary landmarks. They are signs of transformations on roads or buildings, and eventually they disappear just to come out again and do the same job somewhere else.
Landmark refers to the transformations the city and its buildings are constantly facing, but also it is on how this changing moments are perfect for us as society to reflect on where we are coming from and in which direction we want to continue our way.
